About artist

Tullio Gombac was born in Trieste, where he currently lives and works.

A pupil of the painter and sculptor Carlo Sbisà, Tullio Gombac was curator of the Trieste Museo Civico Revoltella and president of the Autonomous Union of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers of the capital of his native region. Researcher and anthropologist, he lived for many years in Africa, in Algeria but especially in Nigeria where he continued his artistic activity, inspired by the contact with the tropical forest. A Friulian painter, he has participated in national and international exhibitions obtaining important awards including - for two consecutive times - the first prize for graphics at the Biennial of Ibiza (Spain). Many of his works can be found today in numerous Italian and foreign museums and collections. The exhibition retreat of Gombac in Italy, in May 2013 at the Galleria Rettori Tribbio, with the personal exhibition "IL RITORNO ED IL RICORDO" (THE RETURN AND THE RECALL), which took place in the sign of ethnochromatism, a re-enactment of reality where the positivity of existence wins. On a notebook were noted with some sketches, the careful studies of the African habitat and its observations "in the field" and then move on to a personal reworking of memories of visual perceptions lived. Impressions of Gombac recreated in many variations. Explosions of dazzling colors, in the fire of bright reds and yellows and in the depths of iridescent blues and greens to give soul to nocturnes and no of an uncontaminated beauty, not yet plundered by time and man. Paintings, those of Gombac, made with watercolors and acrylic tempera for stratified images, with strong colors in a mix of nature and abstraction. Wild forests, pulsating and even suspended between light and shadow, between bright and opaque, between smooth and rough, between harmonies and disharmonies; with intensity it has given and often gives voice and body to roots, barks, palm leaves, pineapple, flower petals and reverberations of earth, pigments and crystals. It is, among others, Professor Roberto Benedetti to write about the works of Tullio Gombac <<(...) The forms are those assumed by the matter-color (...) of an elusive nature, in continuous becoming, made only by ephemeral moments, projections also of symbolic conflicts. Not for nothing the whites, neutral translation of the open spaces, sometimes appear dislocated at the bottom, metaphor of a shadow line always ready to compress or to put at least in toil the luxuriant propulsion of the good that comes from the earth that is mother. (…)>>. On this painter's palette, however, it is black that is the protagonist at the base of the skillful artistic research, black that not infrequently crosses every shade with powerful streaks and scratches, which acquire all the strength of magical-sacral architecture. As stated by critics, blacks that seem to tear silences, transcribe sounds and evoke odours. They seem to reproduce thunderstorm reverses or the flight of birds until they contribute to a synthesis of intuitive messages that combine essentiality and immediacy... They can be found in his masterly engravings made with the technique of etching, aquatint and drypoint to elect him an excellent point of reference in this artistic field.
