About artist

Fiorenzo Sasia was born in Cuneo in 1943, where he lives and works now entirely devoted to painting.

After graduating from the Accademia Albertina in Turin in 1973, he began to paint observing some local painters in the wake of the post-Impressionists and initially turned to portray images that testified his interest in social issues related to the difficulty of communicating/communicability, loneliness, drugs, alcoholism and smoking, using the spatula technique to spread the oil paint on the canvas. Having overcome his preference for these subjects, it is after a trip to Central America that the Piedmontese artist opens up to different cultures: he then creates a series of fascinating ethnic works, one of the most important of which is the polyptych of the Guatemalan market in Chichicastenango (1995), composed of ten paintings measuring 2.50X5.80 meters, exhibited in the Italian Pavilion during the 54th Venice Biennale. For Sasia, large dimensions are an almost physical necessity in order to give voice in an optimal way to its innate and instinctive expressive need. It also changes the body of the canvas and the realization of the support of which he personally proceeds to the assembly. The canvas, which is often jute, more rarely hemp, is worked and treated to give it the material effect, grainy almost like a plaster.Fiorenzo Sasia subsequently made other trips to India, Southeast Asia, the Maghreb and China, confirming his strong attraction to the everyday realities of ordinary people in distant countries characterized by peace and cooperation between peoples. Meanwhile, a teacher of drawing and art history for over twenty years, his curriculum is increasingly enriched by personal and collective exhibitions in Italy and France. In this human and pictorial research, focusing on capturing brief moments of everyday life, Sasia gives substance to her need to enhance as much as possible her innate predisposition for the figure herself with respect to the landscape - a person she believes can be captured at any time during her earthly stay. Just to mention a few exhibitions in which he is the protagonist: the travelling group show in 2011, organized by the Chamber of Deputies, entitled "30 artists for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy" and in 2015 the prestigious exhibition "Art Shopping Louvre" at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris; in 2017 the participation at the Triennale "Aeterna" in Rome in the Complesso del Vittoriano - Ala Brasini and in 2019 at the Milan Biennale. Among the Personals already in 1979 at the gallery La Bottega of Bologna, in 1985 at the Galerie Goyana of Saint Tropez, in 1996 at the Galerie de la Cathédrale of the Principality of Monaco. From 1983 to 1993 his uninterrupted exhibition presence in Paris at the Salon d'Automne. Since 1985 Fiorenzo Sasia has been a member of the Fondation Taylor in Paris - in the same year he also created the cover of a novel by Franco Piccinelli. The works of the skilled creative artist from Cuneo can also be found permanently in public institutions and private national and foreign collections. Finally, it is worth remembering that numerous critics have written about him, among them Paolo Levi, who stated, with regard to Sasia's paintings, <<that he pursues with determination the root of the image, this underlining of forms wisely accentuated by a sure sign, these lights and shadows, which fill the space, are the basic peculiarities of his - magnetic and masterly - poetic>>. A poetics never improvised, rather balanced and constantly faithful to the observed truth reproduced in all its deep richness of content and meaning.
