About artist

Luigi Prevedel,  self-taught sculptor from Trentino, was born in Cles on November 6, 1969. He studied at the Art Institute in Trento (wood section) and worked for more than twenty years as a tiler and carpenter. It is in 2010 the year of turning point for the artist who, although lacking technical knowledge, decides to sculpt a block of Carrara marble of 58 quintals. The incredible executive and personal challenge makes the realization of the work troublesome, but his hands are able to masterfully model the figure of Stefano Zuech, a sculptor from Trentino who lived between the 19th and the 20th century. The work exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the ex-convent of Arsio di Brez (TN), attracts thousands of visitors, including the well-known art critic Vittorio Sgarbi, who is impressed by the extraordinary workmanship and beauty of the work performed by the "sculptor without academy". The sculpture was awarded the first prize at the International Biennial of Asolo in 2014 and is exhibited at the Expo Milano 2015 at the exhibition "Treasure of Italy" of the Italian Pavilion, curated by the same Vittorio Sgarbi. In that period the statue is also requested to be exhibited in Seoul. On the occasion of the First Triennial of Contemporary Art in Verona, in 2016, Prevedel creates a small sculpture in pink Portuguese marble, "Sognando nel Marmo" (Dreaming in the Marble), in line with the directives of the event that limited the weight of the productions to only thirty kilograms. The work is the subject of great interest and success in the artistic world. In 2017, he sculpted "La Morte e il Pianto" (Death and Weeping), a work that immortalizes in the candid Carrara marble the drama of the refugees who lost their lives at sea, represented by the small hexamenous body of little Aylan. The sculpture is conceived and designed by the artist to be a warning of the tragedy, which is why it was donated to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, on September 13, 2017. In 2018, Prevedel creates a sculpture on white stone from Vicenza dedicated to aviation pioneer Gianni Caproni. The work has a remarkable success acclaimed also by the most illustrious art critics and is exhibited at the rural bank of Arco (Trento). In January 2019 he finishes the work "Indisturbed", carved in pink marble from Portugal and exhibited at Palazzo Trentini (Trento), where it receives a resounding success. The exhausting work, carried out completely by hand and without the use of electrical instruments - as are all the other works of the sculptor - took the artist 10 months, during which he did his best to portray a subject without starting from any preparatory sketch or sketch, nor subjecting the model to long hours of posing. During 2019 Prevedel also made his only work in wood, a material he does not like to work with as much as marble, creating a Christ on the Cross whose features are masterful. The work is visible to all in the country of residence of the Artist. The Artist participates to the International Biennial RomArt2019 that took place in Rome from the 20th to the 24th of November, where he was selected among many artists from all over the world among the 150 who exhibited their work, in this case the statue dedicated to Stefano Zuech, in the prestigious rooms of the Stadium of Domitian and Palazzo Velli in Rome. On the occasion of the inauguration of this Biennial, Prevedel has been awarded in the sculpture section with the prize "ART BUSINESS" for the national and international artistic promotion of his works and activities for the whole year 2020 and 2021. In January 2020 the prestigious construction company "Mak" of Lavis (Trento) commissions Prevedel an important sculpture in memory of his family. For this work, the artist starts working on a block of white Carrara marble weighing 70 quintals.
